General FAQ Answers

What is ReverbNation?
ReverbNation.com is a place where artists, fans, labels and venues interact with each other for mutual benefit. Fans can create and share playlists, promote the artists they love, and track the success of artists over time. For artists, ReverbNation.com is more than just a place to do self-promotion, its an invaluable source of information about their fans, venues and other similar artists AND a place to conduct the business of being a musician — including tools for distribution, merchandising, and communication. For Venues and Labels, ReverbNation gives you an outlet to promote yourself, and tools to understand, locate, and interact with artists and fans.

Is membership free?
Yes.

Is the music free?
Much of it is. Artists determine that on a song-by-song basis.

Do the artists get paid?
Yes. Artists will be paid a portion of the advertising revenue in proportion to their popularity on the site. This program is called Fair Share. You can find out more on Fair Share by clicking Here.

I forgot my password. How do I retrieve it?
From the login page, follow the link that says "Forgot my password."

I forgot my username. How do I retrieve it?
From the login page.

How are the rankings/charts determined?
Our charts represent a variety of data gathered on the site including number of times played, number of fans, number of times songs are added to user libraries, number of playlist appearances, and number of downloads. It's a lot of math, but Steve keeps it straight.

Is there an easy way to share my music from ReverbNation with my friends?
Sure! Just click "Queue All" under your song list, hover over the player in the upper right corner, and click "Share" in the drop-down portion of the player.

The system isn't accepting my country code. Where can I find the correct one?
An official list of all country codes can be found by clicking this link

How do I cancel a Premium Service?
Login to your Control Room and visit the My Home tab. Then click the "Manage Premium Services" link and you'll be taken to your list of Active Current Premium Services. From there, just click the blue "Unsubscribe" link next to each service you wish to cancel. You'll be prompted twice to confirm your cancellation, so make sure you don't exit the screen until you receive a confirmation number (you'll also receive an automated email with that same number).

Artist FAQ Answers

What is an artist page?
An artist page is the epicenter of life for artists on ReverbNation. From here artists manage their page (including blogs, tour dates, pictures, etc), upload audio and video, access promotion, distribution and communication tools, and interact with their fans.

I can't log in. I know I registered. What's up?
You should have received a verification email shortly after signing up with instructions on verifying (it's simple, just the click on the link). If you did not receive this e- mail, first check your junk box or spam folder and make sure it did not accidentally end up there. If that doesn't work, send your email address and fan name to support@reverbnation.com, and we will assist you.

How do I change my band's genre or the email addresses we have listed?
To change your band's genre (or other general information), log in to your account and click Profile > Artist Info. Then click the orange "edit" button in the General Information section. To change your email address click the Account button located in your control room and then click Preferences.

How do I change the password to my account?
From your Control Room click My Home > Preferences. From there you can change the password on record.

What songs can I upload?
ReverbNation's player requires MP3 files no larger than 8 MB, with a sample rate of 44,100 Hz. We suggest a bitrate of 160 kb/s.

How do I add songs/videos onto my artist profile page?
From your control room click Profile>Songs and Videos>Upload song. Songs must be in MP3 format, be no larger than 8 MB, and have a sample rate of 44.1 kHz.. Vidoes must be valid Youtube video addresses.

My songs are not uploading properly, what gives?
First, try it a second time. Then, try it again. If it still doesn't work, it may be a technical problem on our side - the Nation's computers are occasionally fussy. Before you contact us at support@reverbnation.com, double check that the file is not corrupt and that your connection is stable.

My song sounds too slow/fast! What's going on?
The ReverbNation Flash player assumes that the MP3 files it plays have a sample rate of 44,100 Hz. If your song sounds too fast (as if the Chipmunks performed it) or too slow (as if it were in a slow-motion replay), it probably has a sample rate higher or lower than that. Re-encode your MP3 with a sample rate of 44,100 Hz (or 44.1 kHz) and upload it again.

How do I reorder my songs on my artist profile page?
Reordering can be done with simple drag and dropping. Remember, the song at the top of your list is the sample song that appears in user searches to represent your band. For this reason, it is recommended that your first song NOT be exclusive.

How do I upload photos to my artist profile page?
From your control room click Profile>Photos. Then click the Upload Photo.

How do I add shows to my artist profile page?
From your control room click Shows > Manage Schedule > Add Show.

How do I link up to other artists I like on ReverbNation?
Click the "Become A Fan" button under any Artist's photo who you would like to link to as one of your "favorites".

Where are all of these "Widgets" I keep hearing about located?
Widgets are all located on the "Widgets" tab of your artist profile page. For information on how and why to deploy your widgets, watch the Tutorial.

What is a TunePak and how do I create one of my music?
TunePaks are customizable playlists of your music that can be pasted into an Instant Message, blog, email, or anywhere else. TunePaks are stand alone music players that are activated by clicking a movable link. To create a TunePak, click the "Share" button above your library. To see play information on already created and sent TunePaks, click the "TunePaks" tab on your artist profile page. For specific song stats, visit the "Stats" section of the Admin/Tools.

Where do I find statistics on my plays, etc.?
Check out the "Stats" section of your Control Room.

How do I sell my songs on ReverbNation?
In the "Earn Money" section of your Control Room, you will find links to our Digital Distribution premium service, as well as a "StoreLink" section for existing stores.

What does it mean when subscribers in FanReach are "Pending"?
Pending subscribers are subscribers that you recently imported. Upon import, all subscribers are sent a confirmation email allowing them the opportunity to opt-out of your mailing list if they wish. These confirmations are sent out in small "packets" over 72 hours, depending on the size of your import. You are NOT allowed to email "Pending" subscribers. If a user opts-in within the 72 hours, they will be moved in to your subscribers and you are allowed to email them. If, after 72 hours, nothing has happened, these subscribers will also be moved into your database and you will be allowed to send mail to them.

Where do the addresses I collect from my FanCollector go?
Right into your FanReach subscribers!

How can I get my music/band featured on the main page?
Send an email to featuredartist@reverbnation.com and tell us why you/your band should be selected. Be sure to include how you have used ReverbNation's tools to your advantage in helping spread your music.

Someone has put up a band page with my band's name on it! What do I do?
Send an email to support@reverbnation.com and include a link to the profile and brief description of the situation. We'll try our best to help, or point you in the right direction!

What is a 'fan exclusive' song?
'Fan exclusives' are a great way to provide casual listeners with an incentive to become registered fans, join your mailing list, and/or provide information about themselves like age, gender, and location so that the Artist can get some additional benefit out of providing great music for them to enjoy. ReverbNation does not recommend making all of an Artist's songs 'fan exclusives'. A 'fan exclusive' means that unidentified listeners will only be able to hear the first 30 seconds of your song. They will be prompted to become a registered fan of the Artist in order to access the full stream or download (depending on the settings you choose in the song dialog box). In order to register as a fan, they will have to provide contact info and/or demographic info about themselves. The fan will be sent a confirmation email to make sure they are not using bogus identification to access the song. Once confirmed, they will be given access to the full song stream and/ or download. 'Fan exclusive' songs will NOT appear on Facebook Band Profile applications, or on any of the widgets EXCEPT for the Tunewidget (those additions will be coming over the next few months). On the Tunewidget, the listener can input all of their info directly into the widget, no matter where it lives on the web.

To make a song a "Fan Exclusive", simply choose that option when you upload. If you want to change an existing song to a "Fan Exclusive", click on the 'edit song' button next to the song and change the setting to one of the 'fan exclusive' options. You must enable FanReach to use the exclusive song features.

How do I get my files into mp3 format so that I can upload them to my profile?
There are several ways to make your files mp3s and several converters on the Internet. If you know what file format your songs are in already, you can Google for a way to convert them (For example, if your files are .wma files, then Google for "convert wma to mp3") and you will find many different ways. If you have your songs on CDs, you can use iTunes easily to convert by following these steps:

  1. Download iTunes for free at www.itunes.com
  2. Open iTunes and go into Preferences > General > Import Settings > drop down menu choose MP3 ENCODER
  3. Insert your cd into your computer and click IMPORT
  4. This will import the tracks from your CD to your computer in mp3 format.

If you already have them in iTunes, follow step 2, and then right click on any song and click "CONVERT SELECTION" and it will convert the file.

The system says my file needs an "mp3 extension," what does that mean?
This either means that your file is not in the mp3 format, or that the filename does not have the required ".mp3" extension on the end of the filename

How do I remove my artist account from ReverbNation?
We will be sorry to see you go, but if you choose to remove your profile from ReverbNation, simply log in and click into your Control Room, click "My Home", then "Preferences", then "Remove Profile."

  • Facebook event and RSVP integrations

What is “Promote It”?
Promote It allows you to promote your shows on Facebook through our powerful and easy-to-use interface. You provide us with a few pieces of information about the show and your venue, and we dynamically create dozens of ads and a custom landing page. We also optimize them so you get the maximum number of fan interactions (plays, downloads, emails, shares, likes, and sales) as possible.

What am I getting with each campaign?
With every package, ReverbNation dynamically creates dozens of ads for you, optimizing them using data and insights from similar campaigns being run by other similar ReverbNation users. These ads are engineered to target potential show attendees with the greatest chances of coming to the show. We automatically create optimized landing pages that prompt the potential attendees to RSVP, share the event, invite their friends, and listen to the artists’ songs.

We have staff (real people) with years of online advertising experience that continually evaluate and improve the ads so they perform as well as possible.

When will my campaign start?
As soon as you have created and paid for your campaign, we submit your ads to Facebook on the start date you have requested (It could be the same day you set up the campaign). However, all ads must be approved by Facebook, a process which can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days. On average, campaigns begin within 24 hours of the start date you select.

How long will my campaign run?
Your campaign will run until it either reaches the specified end date or the total campaign budget is used.

What’s the difference between a $25 campaign and a $50 campaign?
A bigger budget campaign will get you more impressions, clicks, and fan interactions than the smaller budget campaign. In addition to that, the bigger budget campaigns run longer than the smaller budget ones. Because bigger budget campaigns run longer, the Promote It system is able to better optimize the campaign and may produce better results.

Do I have to buy Facebook ads in addition to buying a Promote It campaign?
They are being sent to a dynamic landing page that we create as a value added service and continually optimize based on the fan behavior that we observe. This landing page lives on Facebook, so that potential show attendees are never pulled out of the world of Facebook. The landing page always prompts the user to interact with your content by ‘Liking’ the page, RSVP’ing, sharing the event, inviting their friends, and listening to the artists’ songs. We are continually optimizing the way the landing page works so that you always get the benefit of our learnings without having to do anything.

Where are people being sent once they click an ad?
They are being sent to a dynamic landing page that we create as a value added service and continually optimize based on the fan behavior that we observe. This landing page lives on Facebook, so that potential show attendees are never pulled out of the world of Facebook. The landing page always prompts the user to interact with your content by ‘Liking’ the page, RSVP’ing, sharing the event, inviting their friends, and listening to the artists’ songs. We are continually optimizing the way the landing page works so that you always get the benefit of our learnings without having to do anything.

What type of picture should I select?
The best-performing campaigns typically use a picture of the band members. Potential fans like to see the faces of the music they are listening to.

How many ads are you running for me?
We dynamically create dozens of ads and test which ones perform the best in terms of gaining fan interactions. Each ad that we create can be reviewed and approved by you before we run it. It's part of the special value we bring to the product.

What are fan interactions?
Fan interactions are any interaction a fan has with your content, including Downloads, Emails Collected, Plays, Likes, Shares, Buy Ticket Link clicks, and RSVPs.

How do I get more fan interactions?
The optimal way to find out what works best for you is to continually experiment. The information you enter when setting up the campaign has a big impact on the results that you get. Typically, the best-performing campaigns are those that enter the closest match for the Similar Artists, Venues, and Genres. We recommend trying different combinations of Similar Artists, from global mainstream bands to local niche artists. Think about what other bands your ideal fan would listen to.

What are Recommendations?
Recommendations are the number of News Streams your event was shared into. If a potential show attendee with 150 friends shares your event, then your Recommendations count increases by 150.

Why is a Facebook Event required to promote my show?
The Facebook Event is used to track when a fan RSVPs to your show. A subset of fans that RSVP’d is displayed on the landing page to give potential fans a sense of who is coming to the show. If you have created a Facebook Event already, you can use that one. If not, you’ll have to create a new one when setting up a Promote It campaign.

What happens when I give away free tickets to my show?
You can give away free tickets to fans in exchange for those fans connecting with your venue and promoting your show. In order to use this feature, you must have authorization to provide fans with spots on your guest list. The following events will occur when using this feature:
  • A fan is required to RSVP to the show, join your mailing list, and like your Facebook Page to receive the free ticket. They are also strongly encouraged to invite their friends and share a link to the show details.
  • Each fan that gets a free ticket will receive an email confirmation receipt. They are instructed to bring this receipt to the show, along with a photo ID. This receipt contains their name, photo, and a unique ticket number.
  • The venue will be emailed a complete list of all fans who should receive free tickets. These fans should be added to the show’s guest list. This email will be sent on the day the Promote It campaign completes or the day of the show, whichever comes first.
  • You may also check your Promote It campaign results page for an updated list of all free ticket recipients.

The venue is 100% responsible for honoring the free tickets and for all communication with the fans. The fans will be directed to contact the venue if they have any questions or concerns.

If my campaign ends but the entire budget is not spent, do I get money back?
Yes. You will be credited the remaining balance of the Promote It campaign to your ReverbNation account. This credit can be used for any future Promote It campaign.

Can I change the details of the show after I buy a Promote It campaign?
Limited changes may be made to the show details after a Promote It campaign begins. You can edit the ticket price, ticket link, and details sections. Certain details (like the date of the show) cannot be changed, though, because ads have already been purchased on Facebook on your behalf. If you must change the locked details, you will need to first cancel the running campaign, change the show details, and purchase a new campaign.

Can I sync my ReverbNation status updates with my social networking sites?
Yes, you can sync with Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and YouTube by going to Control Room > My Profile > Social Sync.

Does ReverbNation sync with feeds from external sites like Eventful?
Yes. We currently sync with feeds from Eventful, JamBase, and BandsInTown.

How do I block incoming show feeds?
Go to Control Room > My Home > Preferences and look for the “Show Settings” section.

The feeds in the “Show Settings” section of my Preferences are incorrect. How do I change them?
Contact support and include links to your correct feeds. We will take care of it!

What is “FanReach”?
FanReach is ReverbNation’s fully-featured mailing list application. It is a powerful solution for venues that are seeking a way to communicate with fans and manage their email lists. It features full customizability, powerful statistics and tracking, as well as automatic inclusion of content such as show schedules.

How do I add my pre-existing subscribers to FanReach?
Go to Control Room > FanReach > Add Subscribers. You can add the subscribers manually or via CSV import.

Yes, if you are an artist and run the Promote a Song campaign.  You pick a song to give away for the 'promote a song' campaign.  Through years of research, ReverbNation has found that the best way to increase fan interactions is to give away a song to potential new fans, in exchange for interactions that deliver real value to you.  You do not have to give away the song as a free download on your ReverbNation profile.  It is only given away in conjunction with the promotional campaign.  Once your Promote It campaign is over, the song giveaway will stop such that you are only giving away your song in exchange for verified fan interactions.

How long will my Promote a Song or Promote a Facebook Page campaign run?
Each campaign is unique, so each artist will experience a different campaign length.  Most campaigns run over a period of 1 to 7 days, but some can run for as long as several weeks depending on the genre of music and the variables entered in the campaign setup process.  Once your campaign is running, you can always view the most up-to-date results on the 'campaign results' page.

When will my campaign start?
As soon as you have created and paid for your campaign, we submit your ads to Facebook on the start date you have requested.  (It could be the same day you set up the campaign).  However, all ads must be approved by Facebook, a process which can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.  On average, campaigns begin within 24 hours of the start date you select.

What am I getting with each campaign?
With every package, ReverbNation dynamically creates dozens of ads for you, optimizing them using data and insights from similar campaigns being run by other similar ReverbNation users.  These ads are engineered to target potential fans with the greatest chances of becoming your next fan.  We automatically create optimized landing pages that prompt potential new fans to join your mailing list, share your music, like your Facebook Page, and listen to your songs.

We have staff (real people) with years of online advertising experience that continually evaluate and improve the ads so they perform as well as possible.

That said, each campaign is unique, and so it is impossible to tell exactly what the impact will be for any given package.  This is why we recommend that every artist start with the $25 budget.  This way, you can see how well the system performs for you before moving on to the bigger budgets.

Do I have to buy Facebook ads, in addition to buying a Promote It campaign?
No, when you buy a Promote It campaign, we purchase Facebook ads for you.

Where are people being sent once they click an ad?
Potential fans are being sent to a dynamic landing page that we create and continually optimize based on the fan behavior that we observe.  This landing page lives on Facebook, so that potential fans are never pulled out of the world of Facebook.  The landing page always prompts the user to interact with your content by joining your mailing list, sharing your music, playing your music, or liking your band page.

The sample ad is just an example of what one ad would look like.  We do not provide details about the exact ads that we run on your behalf, as they are continually changing.  It's part of the special value we bring to the product.

What are fan interactions?
Fan interactions are any interaction a fan has with your content, including Downloads, Emails Collected, Plays, Likes, and Shares. Buy Ticket link clicks, and RSVPs.

How do I get more fan interactions?
The optimal way to find out what works best for you is to continually experiment.  The information you enter when setting up the campaign has a big impact on the results that you get.  Typically, the best-performing campaigns are those that enter the closest match for the Similar Artists.  We recommend trying different combinations of Similar Artists, from global mainstream bands to local niche artists.  Think about what other bands your ideal fan would listen to.

What are Recommendations?
Recommendations are the number of streams your music was shared into.  If a potential fan with 150 friends shares your music, then your Recommendations count increases by 150.

Can I edit my campaign after I purchase?
Once the campaign starts running, you cannot make any changes. If you schedule the campaign to start in the future, you can edit the campaign any time before the start date you select.

Promote a Show (for Venues) FAQ Answers

Why is a Facebook Event required to promote my show?
The Facebook Event is used to track when a fan RSVPs to your show. A subset of fans that RSVP’d is shown on the landing page to give potential fans a sense of who is coming to the show.

  • A fan is required to RSVP to the show, join your mailing list, and like your Facebook Page to receive the guest pass. They are also strongly encouraged to invite their friends and share a link to the show details.
  • Each fan that gets a free guest pass will receive an email confirmation that is a receipt for their free pass. They are instructed to bring this receipt to the show, along with a photo ID. This receipt contains their name, photo, and a unique ticket number.
  • The venue will be emailed a complete list of all fans who should receive a guest pass. These fans should be added to the show’s guest list. This email will be sent on the day the Promote It campaign completes or the day of the show, whichever comes first.
  • You may also check your Promote It campaign results page for an updated list of all guest pass recipients.

The venue is 100% responsible for honoring the guest pass and for all communication with the fan. The fan will be directed to contact the venue if they have any questions or concerns.

If my campaign ends but the entire budget is not spent, do I get money back?
Yes. You will be credited the remaining balance of the Promote It campaign to your ReverbNation account. This credit can be used for any future Promote It campaign.

Why can’t I change the details of the show after I buy a Promote It campaign?
Limited changes may be made to the show details, after a Promote It campaign begins. Certain details (like the date of the show) cannot be changed because ads have already been purchased on Facebook, on your behalf. If you must change the locked details, you will need to first cancel the running campaign, change the show details, and purchase a new campaign.
